This is akin all those hot takes about the 2k bug being an hoax:

"Remember when they told us every computer was going to crash on 1/1/01 and there would be chaos and then nothing happened?"

Yeah, I remember. And I'm sure every programmer and sysadmin that contributed the billion person/hour global effort to prevent it also remembers.

No one talks about acid rain anymore, either. And that's a very good thing.

oligopspispopd-deactivated20221

see also START and START II, which significantly reduced nuclear stockpiles

International cooperation is actually so effective that most people don’t even notice it happening, and then erroneously believe it can’t solve anything.

Fixing issues before they develop into actual disasters is such an underappreciated thing it hurts at all levels.

We don't talk about acid rain because there isn't any more acid rain because when acid rain started happening and we learned that the cause was mainly sulphur oxide and carbon monooxide from car exhausts, countries all over the world made it a law that car companies had to produce cars that produced less exhaust with better effectivenes (burning the fuel all the way to CO2 instead of the halfassed CO) and oil rafineries to remove the sulphur from the gasoline in the first place.

We don't talk about computers crashing because of the turn of the century, because thousands of programmers worked very hard to write updates and patches for Every Single Program humanity as a whole used back in 1999 and then somehow managed to failtest, distribute, and update every single device and system, be it an online or offline one before the midnight of the 1st january of 2000.

On a much smaller scale, no one ever commenta or notices cleaners and housekeepers doing their job - be it at home or at whole buildings - because they always make sure that there's nothing to notice. But don't be fooled - at any point of your life you are one week of them not doing away from swimming in trash and filth with nothing to eat and nothing clean to wear. Only then you would notice.

Now it's time to do that thing again and make sure that we don't kill our whole planetary ecosystem within the next century.

the crab day thing kind of proves staff must think we're all fucking idiots

hi there. tumblr as a website is currently operating at a deficit because nobody wants to pay for ad free browsing. this is because basic quality-of-life features are either nonexistent or malfunctioning, our staff refuses to take the most trivial of anti-hate speech measures despite demonstrating the tools to do so against minority bloggers, and every form of content moderation is heavily and transparently weighted against the LGBT community. as the people in charge, we have decided that we're going to ignore all of those factors and instead make an appeal to nostalgia to get you to buy dumb cosmetic bullshit for your dashboard while we threaten to turn the website into an even less functional twitter clone, much like how all the smartest shipwrights in the 1920s decided to model their new vessels after the RMS Titanic.

Being skinny ruined my life. If you’re thin and think to yourself, “why don’t fat people just lose weight?” Please read this

I was the “ideal fat” in the sense that I did everything skinny people wanted me to do. I tried every diet in the book. I exercised regularly. I worked with doctors and dietitians to figure out the best way to lose weight. But nothing worked. I did everything “right” to lose weight, and my weight stayed the same

But the thin people in my life kept telling me that I wouldn’t be happy, attractive, healthy, etc. until I lost weight. So, heartbroken, I came to the conclusion that anorexia was the only option left. It felt safer than bariatric surgery, and was obviously much more affordable

I became the perfect anorexic. 700 cal a day or less, except once a week I allowed myself 1400 cal. For reference, my body required at least 2800 to maintain weight, and at least 1800 to keep my organs and stuff fully functioning. Still, 700 a day, I persisted because everyone in my life told me weight loss was all that mattered. If dieting didn’t work, anorexia had to

And it did. My weight dropped all the way down to 110 pounds. I was skinny - underweight, even - in all sense of the word. The people in my life saw it as a miracle. The ultimate success story. My mother, my “friends,” my doctors, they all congratulated me on my accomplishment

When I confessed my eating disorder to my doctor, he told me, “that’s not the best way to go about it, but I’m glad you lost the weight.” My mother took pictures of me and sent them to relatives to brag

Okay, great. I was skinny. I did what I set out to do. But there were severe consequences

The most obvious was my joint pain doubled, maybe even tripled, to the point that I couldn’t leave the house without a wheelchair

I also developed several health complications, including fatty liver disease and extremely painful GERD. I had to see a handful of specialists and get an endoscopy because of severe stomach pain

My partner, who was the only person who saw my weight loss for what it was (a horrible thing that only happened because of an eating disorder), convinced me to enter a recovery program

For nearly a year, I relearned how to feed myself. I ate everything I was told to eat, nothing more and nothing less. My diet was 100% in the hands of somebody else

And I gained back every pound I has lost. All of the work to become thin went right out the window. It was proven to me that thinness and health were incompatible with my body. If I wanted to be thin, I had to forgo my physical and mental well-being. And vise-versa

Prior to the anorexia, I never once struggled with binge eating. I was naturally an intuitive eater, and I did a good job of having a well rounded diet. After the anorexia, after recovery, I developed a binge eating disorder. I had spent so long starving myself, that my brain and body got stuck in survival mode, desperate to consume any and all calories out of fear that I might starve again. To this day I struggle with binge eating

I did everything thin people wanted of me. I dieted. I exercised. And when all else failed, I starved myself. Now I have liver disease, stomach issues, and BED. Not to mention the loads of mental issues that accumulated as a result of my weight loss journey. During the throes of my anorexia, I had to be hospitalized for suicidal ideation

When you tell fat people to “just lose weight” you are suggesting they give themselves illnesses for which treatments are not always effective. You are asking fat people to destroy their stomachs and livers. When a fat person loses so much weight that they become skinny, they are likely giving up so much of their health in efforts to be treated like a human being

If you’re thin, do your part. Treat fat people like people before we tear our bodies apart

I never had to go into recovery, but I was close. I realized that my family and friends were cheering my ED on, with the exception of my mom, who was shocked at my visible spine and ribs. I was not going to find help outside of myself, just more shame and degradation and fear of being fat and being treated as worthless again. I knew I was going to die if I kept on what I was doing (at the time, eating one meal every three days).

Then I read Gina Kolata's Rethinking Thin, stumbled across the Fatosphere (Shapely Prose and Junkfood Science...anyone remember those blogs?), and I stopped dieting for good. I bounced up back to my old weight in 18 months and have stayed there ever since. My body really, really wants to be fat. I didn't want to battle it, anymore. I wasn't going to win, and I had better things to accomplish with my time and effort.

I lost a lot of thin privilege, a shocking amount, in an incredibly short period of time. You can't ever convince me there isn't thin privilege. I was treated like a completely different person practically overnight. It made me--still makes me--incredibly sad. Fat people are the same people they'd be if they were thin.

Thin people, you would be the same, if you were fat. Do you think you'd deserve the derision you pile on fat people if you woke up fat, tomorrow? You might. Side effects of medications, post-pregnancy body changes, accidents that reduce mobility, illness, and aging can all result in weight gain. Wouldn't you like to be treated like a human being worthy of good medical care, professional respect, romantic value, and basic dignity?

Treat fat people well: because we deserve it, because you might be in our place someday, and because it might save a life.

Unfriendly reminder that all you idiots being like "yeah just pirate media now, fuck corporations!" posting links and just openly telling people where to download pirated media are why it's so hard to find safe, working sites for it anymore.

I've been doing this shit for over 20 years and the availability has gone down as it's become more mainstream. The more you publicly talk about all these sites the less there are. Shut up. Tell people in private or don't tell them at all.

DASHBOARD UNFUCKER V1.0

as 90% of desktop users have probably found out, today @staff released an update that for some insane reason COMPLETELY remodels the dashboard to replicate twitter's. this is of course in the wake of numerous other thoroughly hated changes and a continued refusal to fix any of the site's actual problems, half of which stem directly from site management.

HOWEVER, thanks to the power of jQuery, i was able to throw together a userscript that remodels the dashboard back to its original look almost perfectly.

here is my dashboard right now, with the script active:

image

and here is the old dashboard in separate tab container that hasn't received the update:

image

it's hardly perfect; i had trouble making it force reload to the fixed layout when switching between other pages and the dashboard, and it currently only fixes just the dashboard. it's also completely untested on browsers other than firefox, and chances are it looks a bit screwy on ultrawide monitors. but for now at least, it's a good fix.

the unfucker is a tampermonkey userscript. all you have to do to use it is install the tampermonkey extension, hit "create new script", and replace the default code on the page with the script (link here) and save it.

style tips for people who don’t want to just pick one or two aesthetics

  • Head and feet are the most important pieces. They bracket your look and decide the overall vibe. The same top and pants could be styled into 5 different subcultures/styles depending on the hair/hat and shoes. If you can only invest in one area, make it hats and shoes. The rest can be whatever you can scrounge up
  • I use the rule of 4: white, black, brown, bright. If you have black shoes, white shoes, brown shoes, and a pair of brightly colored shoes, you can make an outfit for every alt fashion style. Mine are two pairs of cheap shit Amazon platforms a pair of ratty brown fake uggs I’ve had for like 4 years, and the nicest pair of shoes I’ve ever invested in, my YRU Prismatic Qosmos.
  • Same color guide for head accessories, with the caveat that I think that categorically every style chameleon wardrobe needs at least beanie and a ball cap, and if you like presenting femininely, a beret and a sun hat are good staples as well. I’m not a good person to ask about appropriate numbers of hats however, I have like 16 hats and 10 hair bows. And a scruncie collection but that’s mostly for putting my hair up at work.
  • Other accessories are more specific: one chunky choker, a flannel shirt and a cardigan or two for layering, an oversized jacket (with arms wide enough to fit a thinner layer underneath because nothing is worse than trying to layer sleeves, and a few colors of long socks are good staple pieces. A white collared shirt or a fake collar too, those are so handy.
  • Pick core pieces with maximum versatility. A pair of wide legged black trousers could be styled from dark academia to goth to punk, and a tight white cropped t shirt can run the gambit of styles.
  • Add in staple statement pieces to accent to core basics: a frilly lace collared blouse, a waistcoat, a long dark green skirt, etc.
  • Remember sunglasses and jackets. It sounds silly but nothing is worse than having the perfect outfit but no matching jacket or sunglasses if it’s Sunny, you need sunglasses. If it’s cold or rainy, you need a jacket. And if you’re decked out head to toe in pastels and you only have a pair of black cat eye sunglasses? You’re gonna be annoyed the whole day. 1 light pair, one dark pair. 1 white jacket, 1 black jacket. If you can swing for umbrellas and bags as well, that’s a great trick for an Uber-polished vibe.

Declutter Tumblr

The new layout it a whole mess. Thankfully Xkit can already help with a bunch of this! I'm sure it'll give more options soon.

Vanilla Tumblr:
(I have marked in red what can be removed. The tabs can be set not to stick, so you will really only see them at the top of your dash. Empty box on the left for hidden notifications and shop sparkle, i just didn't have any. I'm EU so no Live for me).

Oh and that fucking crab day post sends shivers down my spine btw. I say this as someone who owns multiple pieces of tumblr merch — support them if you want, or don’t, I don’t care, but we are NOT turning a tech corporation into our poor little wet meow meow who deserves all our money uwu. We are NOT pressuring normal ass people into donating to resolve a company’s millions in debt as if it’s some important charitable cause.

also, the crab day post was made by a terf. if you celebrate crab day I’m going to assume you’re a terf too and I’ll block you

Anime studios need to strike next

Down with seasonal anime down with overconsumption down with every series regardless of how complex needing to be boiled down to fit into 12 episodes

there’s just too many shows

too many shows and they’re coming out at such an unprecedented rate that we can’t even fully appreciate them. and I KNOW that people are slaving away in unethical work conditions to make them, all so that nobody can even remember them, no matter how lovingly crafted or beautiful they really are

I'm not a train autist but I still feel an innate connection with trains every time I see them im like woww you're so cool and intricate Can U text me
